Arrested IM man confesses to 7/11 blasts

An exclusive information with CNN-IBN‘s sister channel IBN 7 reveals that there is a lot more data available now on the Mumbai blasts of July 7.

A top Indian Mujahideen operative, Sadiq Sheikh has confessed on camera the modus operandi of how the group brought about the blasts in Mumbai and Delhi.

“All five of us arranged local train passes for the first class compartments beforehand. We also had local train timetable with us so that we could find out the train as per our convenience. We purchased bags and pressure cookers in Mumbai. On the day of blast that is on 11 July, 2006, all five of us assembled and we filled seven cookers with explosives. We kept the bombs ready. We had planned the bomb to blast at 6:30 pm,” said Sadiq in the confession recorded and in possession of IBN 7.

Sadiq, one of the main planters of the 7/11 serial train blasts in Mumbai was also assigned the ‘responsibility’ of recruiting others into IM. Sadiq helped Atif Sheikh, another IM operative of the Delhi serial blasts to reach Pakistan for training.

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) had on March 21 secured the custody of Sadiq Shaikh, alleged to be a founder-member of Indian Mujahideen, in connection with the July 2006 serial train blasts.

“Atif (another IM operative) gave me a bag which I kept in one of the local trains. Abu Rashid and Sajid then joined me in keeping their bags in the other trains. Abu Rashid travelled till Dadar in the same train, and then left for Sewree. After a while, through the general public we were informed of the bomb blasts in the local trains,” adds the confessor in cold blood.

Sheikh had been produced before the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) judge Y P Shinde who is conducting trial of 21 IM members. The judge had remanded Shaikh to ATS’s custody till March 5.

The group, including three IT professionals, has been charged under the stringent MCOCA Act.

Sadiq’s role does not stop at the Mumbai blasts. He has confessed to masterminding the ghastly pre-Diwali blasts in Delhi on 29 October 2005.

He also helped Atif Sheikh of the Delhi serial blasts to reach Pakistan for training.

His complicity in sending out terror emails on behalf of the Indian Mujahideen is under the scanner.

Mumbai police has charge sheeted Sadiq and associates in connection with the terror emails and thefts of cars.

About the delhi blasts, Sadiq said, “Sarojini Nagar, Paharganj, Govindpuri were the targets for the blast. We used to stay in a flat at Jasola. Atif, Shadab, Aarij, Shakeel and Sakib were involved in the group. I used to accompany them in making bombs. I and Atif were now trained in making bombs. I left for my native place before the Delhi blast and on the day itself, I got the news of the blasts in the capital city.”

Known as India’s Osama, it is now being investigated as to how big a role did this man play in the serial blasts of Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

Sadiq is also one of the first members arrested by Mumbai police in October 2008. His interrogation led to the subsequent arrests of 20 other IM operatives.

Mumbai police has charge sheeted Sadiq and associates in connection with the terror emails and thefts of cars.
