Cruz, Ledger win Oscars for supporting roles

Heath Ledger, posthumously, and Penelope Cruz won for best supporting roles at the 81st annual Academy Awards Sunday night.
Mr. Ledger’s father, mother and sister accepted his Oscar for best supporting actor as the Joker in “The Dark Knight.” Mr. Ledger died of an accidental overdose of prescription pills last year. His Oscar had been widely expected.
“This is so humbling,” said Mr. Ledger’s father, Tim.
“We have been truly overwhelmed by the honor,” said his mother, Sally Bell.
Ms. Cruz won for best supporting actress in her role in “Vicky Christina Barcelona.”
“This ceremony was a moment of unity for the world,” she said, clutching the Oscar. “We should do everything we can to protect its survival.”
A production number by host Hugh Jackman, voted People magazine’s Sexiest Man of the Year late last year, opened the Academy Award performance in the Kodak Theater.
