Phelps suspended from US swimming for 3 months
Record-breaking Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has been suspended from competition for three months by USA Swimming because of a photo that shows the Olympic star inhaling from a marijuana pipe.
Officials with the sport’s national governing body say they want to “send a strong message.”
Phelps could face criminal charges following the publication of a photograph by a British newspaper purportedly showing him smoking marijuana at a party being held by students at the University of South Carolina in Columbia in November.
A South Carolina law enforcement official said he would charge Phelps if he could prove the US Olympian smoked marijuana in his county.
